Step into Liquid

Step into Liquid Author: Cimeron Morrissey If this kiteboarding thing doesn't work out, the crew at Liquid Force might consider a career in medicine.

To develop the new Board Interface System, Liquid Force's designers and engineers combed through numerous studies by orthopedic surgeons and podiatric sports-medicine experts to find inventive ways to help prevent knee injuries and leg exhaustion. The Board Interface System represents the translation of their findings into a practical application for kiteboarding. The kit, which includes foot straps and adjustable heel straps, features foot pads designed to alleviate fatigue and help prevent knee injuries. Asa Giffin, Liquid Force product manager/designer and a former computer engineer, says several of the studies implied that one way to help prevent knee problems is to insure a proper stance.

This starts at the feet, so the new foot pads are canted inward and also forward, which, Giffin says, encourages proper leg posture. "When you kiteboard, your stance is wider than your shoulders. With your feet flat on the board, your knees are prone to bending outward, which can cause problems since knees are only meant to bend forward," says Giffin. "We developed these foot pads to get the knees to bend in the direction they are supposed to bend.

" Liquid Force also turned to the studies to find ways to reduce leg fatigue, which resulted in the pads' foot support system. The pads, made of a soft foam that molds to the foot, have arch support and embedded air packs to cushion landings. "The air packs transfer the force from your heel to the board more efficiently," says Giffin. "Like in a running shoe, the air packs in our foot pads help absorb some of the shock, which means your legs don't have to work as hard.

" The Board Interface System includes optional heel straps, designed for riders seeking the locked-in feeling of bindings with the flexibility of adjusting their feet on the pad. The Board Interface System's MSRP is $99.99. It comes complete with two foot pads on polycarbonate plates, two heel straps, two foot straps, a board handle, hardware and fasteners.
